The Nollywood Producers Guild USA held its official inauguration event on Saturday the 15th of October 2016. The event witnessed the recognition of some individuals and organizations that have contributed immensely, and is still assisting to the growth of the Nollywood and African film and entertainment industries in the diasporas.
Speaking at the event, the President of the Guild, Hon. Oliver O. Mbamara, said “there are many African stories to be told, and many histories and cultures to be processed and executed through the African perspective. Nollywood offers both a voice for our people in today’s dynamic socio-economic environment and a varieties of investment opportunities to be explored and enjoyed.” He urged all “to be ready and willing to partner with the new Nollywood USA Guild so as to take advantage of these investment opportunities and to help the Guild sustain these stories and cultures for a younger and future generation of film practitioners.
The glamorous occasion was hosted by former delectable beauty Queen / Miss Nigeria and Nollywood first generation actress & super model Regina Askia Williams. It was well attended event by film- industry stake holders as well as some distinguished members of the diplomatic sector & Polity. The Acting- Consul General of Nigeria in New York represented by Mrs. C. A. Okorie-Haidara, Consul/Head of Chancery Nigerian Consulate in New York and the Deputy Mayor of Newark, Hon. Ugochukwu Nwaokoro.
Some highlights of the inauguration included lectures and panel sessions drawn-out from high profile speakers such as Professor Jonathan Haynes, Professor Yusuf Juwayeyi, Dr. Sylvester Okere, Bollywood’s Kanti Pandya, and Nollywood’s star actress Uche Jombo, delivered a key note address on Nollywood & film making. Her speech resonated with the audience.
The newly elected officers of the Nollywood USA Guild were sworn in and inducted by Judge Mojgan Sobhani. Inducted officers were, Oliver O. Mbamara (President); Bethels Agomuoh (Vice President); Chisom Oz-Lee (Public Relations Officer), Sir Felix Nnorom (Treasurer), Monica Omorodion Swaida (Financial Secretary), and Dr. Clarice Kulah (Asst. Secretary). Among other highlights of the epic event was the previewing time at the beginning of the program given to a highly collaborative effort of Nollywood USA guild members & stake holders of the movie’s trailer titled, “It Takes a Man.” Sonorous Koleurz’s World Premiere of her Hit Single “Better Naija” truly entertained the esteemed audience.
Those who received the Nollywood Producers Guild USA Merit award were ~Iman Drammeh of the DrammehInstitute, Dr. Victor Olatoye of NAFCA and Emem Isong, Veteran Nollywood Writer/ roducer. The Nollywood USA film titled 30 Days in Atlanta also received Guild’s 2016 Merit Award. The film was directed by a member of the Nollywood Producers Guild USA, Robert Peters, produced by AY, and co-produced by another Nollywood Producers Guild USA member, Dr. Clarice Ford-Kulah. There was also recognition of Community members who have been supporting Nollywood and African filmmakers in North America. They include Dr. Christopher Adubor, Dr, Oluyemi Badero, and Esther Obioha.
